There’s no denying we all love dumplings and we are spoiled for choice with dumpling pockets popping up everywhere in Christchurch.

One of our newest pockets and it’s worth seeking out. With doors surrounded by ivy, you know you’re onto something special the moment you walk through the door. Beautifully presented in recyclable cardboard boxes adds to the clean contemporary feeling inside. Right down to the wooden forks, Zen really will make you feel......well, Zen. The team are passionate about simple food using the best ingredients. All meat is free range and salmon is locally sourced. Dine in or takeaway, take a moment to relax and enjoy the newly refurbished surroundings of the Art’s Centre.
Must try: Their Chicken Katsu salad with sesame sauce is a must try.
Hands down a city favourite, if you haven’t sampled Potsticker’s handmade creations yet, you’re missing out. Not only is everything made on site right in front of you, this pocket has a seriously cool urban vibe with exposed brick walls and red lanterns on the ceiling. Next to the Dux on Poplar Lane, it’s a must visit for after work drinks and dinner, or for a weekend catch up with friends. Plus they offer takeaway too for those on the go.
Must try: Their pork and ginger dumplings are a perfect combination.
These guys have set the scene for dumplings houses in Christchurch. Owner and dumpling king Norman has 30 years experience creating these little parcels and is proud to say all meat is free range and supplied locally. Inside has an upmarket street feel with decorative Chinese lanterns and colourful propaganda style posters. The menu offers a wide range of Shanghai-inspired street food from dumplings ($9.50 for 6) and steamed buns, to rice, noodle and soup dishes.
Must try: You can’t go wrong with the Siu Mai: Dumplings packed with pork, prawn, shitake mushrooms and flavoured with fragrant ginger and scallions.
A must do for a night out in Christchurch. Featuring unique Asian-fusion dishes to share with punchy flavour combinations, King of Snake offers the perfect environment to step out of your comfort zone and order something you normally wouldn’t. Casual modern dining with a mix of shared seating, tables and bar stools. King of Snake has a vibrant atmosphere that’s pumping at night so it’s worth making a booking.
Must try: Sticky Beef Wontons and the Prawn Dumplings in Supreme Broth.
Hailed by locals as the best dumplings in town The China Kitchen is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a casual lunch or grab takeaways. Relocating to Papanui after 10 years in the CBD, their loyal fans followed ensuring dumplings remained their signature dish. Free from MSG and made fresh daily, the dumplings ($7 for 6) are generous – twice the size of typical dumplings and are packed with fresh flavours. Whatever you choose for your main, make sure you get a ½ dozen mix of dumplings for an entree so you can try each flavour.
Must try: Pork & Chive dumpling
Centrally located on the corner of Hereford Street and Rolleston Avenue by Christchurch’s Botanical Gardens and the Arts Centre- you cannot go past Duo Dining for tasty dumplings. With dumplings made fresh to order you are in for a fresh treat.
Must try: Steamed pork and prawn dumplings with crushed peanuts, chili vinegar sauce.
